Ayurvedic Morning Rituals
Discover the ancient Ayurvedic dinacharya (daily routine) practices that can energise your body, sharpen your mind, and bring lasting balance to your life.

The Power of Dinacharya
In Ayurveda, dinacharya — the daily routine — is considered the cornerstone of good health. The ancient texts of Charaka Samhita and Ashtanga Hridayam prescribe a sequence of morning practices that align the body with the natural rhythms of the day.
1. Wake Before Sunrise (Brahma Muhurta)
The period roughly 90 minutes before sunrise is called Brahma Muhurta — the "creator's hour." Waking during this time is said to enhance mental clarity, creativity, and spiritual awareness. The air is rich with prana (life force), and the mind is naturally calm before the day's stimulation begins.
2. Tongue Scraping (Jihwa Prakshalana)
Before drinking or eating anything, use a copper or stainless-steel tongue scraper to remove the coating that accumulates overnight. This coating, called ama in Ayurveda, represents accumulated toxins. Scraping it away prevents reabsorption and stimulates the digestive organs through reflex points on the tongue.
3. Oil Pulling (Kavala Graha)
Swish one tablespoon of sesame or coconut oil in your mouth for 10–15 minutes, then spit it out (never swallow). This practice is said to strengthen the teeth and gums, clear the sinuses, and draw toxins from the oral cavity. Modern research supports its antibacterial properties.
4. Abhyanga — Self Oil Massage
Warm a small amount of sesame oil (for Vata types), coconut oil (for Pitta types), or mustard oil (for Kapha types) and massage your entire body before bathing. Work in long strokes on the limbs and circular strokes on the joints. Abhyanga nourishes the skin, calms the nervous system, improves circulation, and is one of the most powerful anti-ageing practices in Ayurveda.
5. Warm Water with Lemon and Ginger
After bathing, begin your day with a cup of warm (not boiling) water infused with fresh lemon juice and a few slices of ginger. This kindles agni (digestive fire), flushes the digestive tract, and provides a gentle dose of Vitamin C and anti-inflammatory compounds.
Getting Started
You do not need to adopt all five practices at once. Begin with tongue scraping — it takes 30 seconds and the benefits are immediately noticeable. Add one practice per week until the full routine feels natural.
At Ayur Well, our practitioners can assess your prakriti (constitutional type) and tailor a dinacharya that suits your unique dosha balance. Book a consultation to get started.
