Ayurvedic Massage Kandy: Complete Guide

Why Kandy Is Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic Heart

Nestled in the Central Highlands at an altitude of 500 metres, Kandy is Sri Lanka's cultural capital and the natural home of authentic Ayurvedic practice. The city's cooler climate, clean mountain air, and proximity to medicinal herb gardens make it the ideal setting for restorative Ayurvedic therapies.

At Ayur Well, we bring this ancient tradition into a modern, welcoming environment — offering a full menu of classical treatments performed by trained therapists using freshly prepared herbal oils and authentic techniques.

The Four Core Ayurvedic Massages at Ayur Well

1. Abhyanga — Full Body Oil Massage

Duration: 1 hr 30 min (including 20-min herbal steam) Best for: Stress relief, fatigue, dry skin, Vata imbalance, general wellness

Abhyanga is the foundation of Ayurvedic bodywork. The word means "loving hands" in Sanskrit, and the treatment lives up to its name. Two therapists work in synchronised strokes, applying warm dosha-specific herbal oil from head to toe — long strokes on the limbs, circular movements on the joints, and gentle pressure on marma (vital energy) points.

The session concludes with Swedana — a personalised herbal steam bath that opens the pores, drives the oil deeper into the tissues, and flushes loosened toxins through the skin.

What clients say: "After my first Abhyanga at Ayur Well, I slept better than I had in months. The synchronised two-therapist technique is unlike anything I have experienced in a conventional spa."

Who should choose Abhyanga: Anyone experiencing stress, insomnia, dry or ageing skin, muscle stiffness, or general fatigue. It is also the ideal introductory treatment for first-time Ayurveda clients.

2. Shirodhara — Third Eye Oil Therapy

Duration: 1 hr 15 min Best for: Anxiety, insomnia, migraines, mental exhaustion, Vata-Pitta imbalance

Shirodhara is one of Ayurveda's most iconic and deeply therapeutic treatments. The client lies in a reclined position while a continuous, rhythmic stream of warm medicated oil is poured over the forehead — specifically over the ajna chakra (third eye), the seat of the nervous system's command centre.

The effect is profoundly sedative. Within minutes, the nervous system enters a state of deep rest that is measurably different from ordinary relaxation — brainwave studies have shown Shirodhara induces alpha and theta wave states similar to deep meditation.

The oil matters: At Ayur Well, we select the oil based on your dosha assessment. Sesame oil is used for Vata types, coconut oil for Pitta, and mustard or neem oil for Kapha. Brahmi-infused oils are used when the primary concern is mental clarity or memory.

Clinical applications: Research published in the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine has documented Shirodhara's effectiveness in reducing cortisol levels, improving sleep quality in insomnia patients, and reducing anxiety scores in clinical trials.

Who should choose Shirodhara: Those suffering from chronic stress, anxiety, insomnia, migraines, tinnitus, or mental fatigue. It is also recommended as part of a Panchakarma preparatory programme.

3. Udvarthana — Herbal Powder Massage

Duration: 1 hr Best for: Weight management, cellulite, lymphatic drainage, Kapha imbalance, skin exfoliation

Udvarthana is the most vigorous of Ayur Well's massage treatments — and the most transformative for those with Kapha-dominant constitutions. Unlike oil-based treatments, Udvarthana uses a paste or dry powder of medicinal herbs applied in firm, upward strokes against the direction of hair growth.

The primary herbs used include triphala (a blend of three fruits with powerful antioxidant and metabolic properties), mustard powder, fenugreek, and calamus root — each selected for their ability to stimulate circulation, break down subcutaneous fat, and activate the lymphatic system.

Visible results: Clients typically notice smoother, brighter skin after a single session. A course of 7–14 sessions is recommended for meaningful changes in body composition and lymphatic health.

Who should choose Udvarthana: Those seeking weight management support, lymphatic drainage, skin brightening, or relief from the heaviness and sluggishness associated with Kapha imbalance. Also excellent for athletes managing muscle recovery and inflammation.

4. Rasayana — Rejuvenation Therapy

Duration: 1 hr 45 min Best for: Anti-ageing, post-illness recovery, deep nourishment, rebuilding vitality

Rasayana is Ayurveda's answer to the modern obsession with anti-ageing — but its scope is far deeper than skin-deep. The word means "path of essence" and refers to a class of therapies designed to nourish the body at the cellular level, rebuild the seven dhatus (body tissues), and extend healthy lifespan.

At Ayur Well, the Rasayana treatment combines:

  • A full-body Abhyanga with rare rejuvenating oils (including Ashwagandha, Shatavari, and Bala)
  • A targeted marma point treatment to activate the body's self-healing intelligence
  • A Shiro Abhyanga (head and scalp massage) with Brahmi oil to nourish the brain and sensory organs
  • A herbal steam bath to seal in the oils and complete the treatment

Who should choose Rasayana: Those recovering from illness, surgery, or prolonged stress; those experiencing premature ageing, hair loss, or declining immunity; and anyone seeking a profound, full-body restoration rather than simple relaxation.

How to Choose the Right Treatment
